Season 7 – Round 8 of Iron Builder – starting November 29th!

Welcome to Season 7 – Round 8 of Iron Builder!

Who will take home the crown?

Our defending Iron Builder Champion Eann McCurdy or our challenger Andrew Cazenave-Tapie?

And the seed part is…

This round’s seed part is the Plant Flower Bell Shaped with Small Pin Hole in dark blue.

Now our two contestants have 14 days to come up with amazing and inspiring creations featuring this seed part. Wish them luck! They’ll better get cracking!

Who are you rooting for? Who will take it home? Whose builds reign supreme?

Only one way to find out! ALLEZ BRICK!

Mrs. Cheeseman’s Sanctuary

Hey Andrew! It’s been a hot minute since the bell rang; excited to see what you’ve been cooking up with the seed part

I hope you aren’t as lost as the protagonist of this build. Don’t worry if you are, though; there’s always a mouse around to guide the way! Myself? Anyone who’s familiar with my photo stream will know mushrooms and I go a long way back. So as we started tinkering, imagine my de-light when I found that it makes a great fantastical mushroom!

Who will-ow win this round? We’ll leaf it to the judges to decide in just a few weeks, but in the meantime, let’s put on a show!

Blue-Bell Monastery

Hey Eann! I see you’ve had a lovely early start, but don’t worry about me I’m not far behind and if you don’t watch out I will catch up. I’m glad to hear you’ve found comfort with your beloved mushrooms. Just make sure to not eat the wrong ones, or you might end up as blue as them!

In any case, I can hear the bell ringing loudly for plenty of brand new ideas, pouring out like a fountain, so I wish you luck for the rest of this round, you’re definitely going to need it if you wish to retain your title!

Wedding Cake

Excellent microscale build; the bell connection is super fun!

Unfortunately, taking my throne isn’t going to be a piece of cake like you may have thought. I’m well prepared for our con-frost-ation and won’t go down easy. Try to topper this!

LEGO Perchta Mask

I can see that you’ve been cooking last two days. It’s quite fitting since this Perchta is quite hungry. However I doubt a cake will be enough, she seems to want the victory too!

Zhiguli on the road

Well Eann, you seem to have gone a little quiet out there. So much so that I had to send out a good old Zhiguli to look for you. In the meantime, I’ve discovered how forks and bell flowers make perfect power line insulators.

Live Iron Builder Reaction

Sorry, I got carried away in a brainstorming session. Love those powerlines; the fork connection looks a bit sketchy but is quite clever! When first opening this piece, I was a bit skeptical at first. Turns out there’s a whole lot of room to play with connections after all! Don’t pencil in this as a win yet, though; it’ll take more than cool connections to get the judges to note- ice.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

If you give mousellanabuilds a bell-shaped flower

Then he’ll probably build a teacher.

When he’s done building the teacher,

He’ll probably build a blackboard too.

…then he’ll realize a floating blackboard looks stupid and spend the next 72 hours building an entire classroom.

Laboratory Tools

Great work with that classroom scene, very clean and creative. I even had to get the microscope out to inspect some of those well hidden connections. Don’t worry though, my laboratory is still working at full capacity and we may or may not have found more promising recipes for upcoming builds!

Sink with Flowers

Lovely microscope! I don’t know about you, but now that we’ve had plenty of time for the round to sink in, I’ve been feeling quite drained. Believe it or not, though, we only have a few days left; hopefully you aren’t feeling b-rushed!

LEGO Fighter Jet

Oh I still feel like we’re just getting started. There’s no doubt we’ve been flying through this round! Yet, for an IB round between engineers, it was about time someone brought some more serious engineering. I hope you don’t mind me taking a page from my own field for this one.

Roll for Initiative!

I think the term “engineer” is a generous title for my position compared to your job- I’m sure the skills of your field dwarf mine. The quality of that airship definitely explains where you’ve been the last couple of days!

Personally, though, I like to keep my work and hobbies separate; while you’ve been designing aircraft, I’ve been exploring the depths of a dungeon. But enough roleplay: we only have a few days left, and it’s time to take initiative! I’ve been taking it easy on you the last couple of builds, but it’s time to roll up my sleeves and begin my final build. See you Saturday, and best of luck in the final days!

Farewell, Coral City

How are we doing bud? Feel like I haven’t sean you in a hot minute! Hang in there; you’re in the home stretch now!

These have been a wild two weeks, huh? From slices of cake, to planes, automobiles- maybe we’ll even see a train in these last few hours? May as well add a submersible/boat to the list while we’re at it! This part was a fun one, even if the minimal connections caused some headache along the way. Truly, though, I feel we’ve barely dived beneath the surface! So far I’ve counted 36 unique uses, and yet it feels like we could be going on for eternity. Thankfully for myself- and for my sleep schedule that has been shot to 9th layer of hell so mach as to put convention nights to shame- this ends tonight (well, it still feels like night). It’s been a pleasure to compete with you; not against you, but alongside you! May the best builder prevail!

Medieval Market

Well Eann , it seems this round has finally come to an end, and while you decided to go to the depths of the ocean, I couldn’t think of a better way to end than to take it back to where it started: medieval/fantasy times. It’s been a an honour to compete with you these past two weeks and I must say you’re quite a worthy opponent. But in any case, things are now on the judges hands, and who knows maybe we’ll all be floored by the results!

Round 8 is officially over!

It is now in the hands of our judges to decide who has won this round!

Good luck to both our builders!

Iron Builder's thrilling eighth round has come to a close!

I never expected this seed part to be 6017—it's not even in my Studio (or maybe I just haven't upgraded...).
Well, regardless, I was incredibly curious to see how this tiny seed part would blossom in the hands of our two builders.

First up, our old friend Eann. I must admit that in the initial round, the mushroom design seemed slightly overshadowed by Andrew's fountain and clock creations.
Next. Eann incorporated it into a single piece as a minifigure body, a candle, and cream flowers (that tray had me staring for ages...). In terms of the sheer number of uses, Eann clearly held the upper hand this round.
Oh, and I just have to say—I absolutely loved the classroom piece! It was packed with incredible detail! The electric toothbrush, mimicking an official set, was another delightful surprise.

Just when I thought Eann had it in the bag, I saw Andrew's “Medieval Market.” While using 6017 as flooring felt a bit like showing off, it was undeniably stunning! Andrew evened the score!

In the end, in this closely contested battle, I think Eann edged out the win. Congratulations to Eann, and equally to the equally talented Andrew. Thank you both for an amazing show.

Another great year of Iron Builder comes to an end with one final decision to make!

Parts Usage
In general, I think both our contestants featured some amazing seed parts usages in this round, with many clever ways of incorporating multiple ones in single MOC’s. On Andrew’s side, I love the Blue-Bell Monastery and especially the Laboratory Tools, the latter presenting five(!) different usages, all of them pretty much perfect. However, the plant pieces don’t look that convincing on the Medieval Market’s columns and the power poles. With only six builds in total, that makes it tough to win this category.
In the end, that doesn’t matter all that much, as Eann brought us the greatest Seed Parts Usage of the whole IB year: Both his classroom and Coral City are obviously stuffed with such a variety of smart ideas, but even small details like the bride on his Wedding Cake, the toothbrush or the sobbing emoji are simple yet brilliant. Overall, there’s no angle or section of the plant piece that didn’t get used in his selection of builds, resulting in a perfect score and a well-deserved win!

Build Quality
This one’s way more tough. Eann showed us that he’s capable of any type of build: Characters, life-sized object and full scenes, he can do it all. Andrew on the other hand came up with equally amazing creations, the Perchta Mask and Fighter Jet are so different, but mastered on the same smooth level of quality. I just wish he wouldn’t have sticked to mostly gray color schemes, which often looks too serious and sterile next to the bright light blue seeds. To me, his Zhiguli on the road is emblematic, because the idea for the seed parts usages is perfect, but the convincingly looking rest simply doesn’t match their demand for a more exaggerated and fun appearance, ultimately failing in both categories.
That is where Eann wins me over by adjusting his style to the roundish nature of the bell-shaped plant pieces, most notably on his comically rendered mage and dwarf. He also matched it with other pastel colors on the cake, showing his ability to adapt to the needs of both the seed part’s shape and color.

Performance
Again, Eann doesn’t really offer any weak spots. Whereas Andrew’s builds are all very well-made, but presented on the same plain black background, his opponent wowed me with his versatility by adding both real objects like a cake plate or coffee mug on a wooden table, while also showing off his editing skills to serve the composition. Completely overediting his Sink of Flowers is what elevates the MOC from being absolutely tasteless to sharply satirical.
Unfortunately, Andrew closed off his round with his weakest build (although the floor pattern is lovely), so weirdly framed between vignette and scene, when Eann finishes his game with a particularly strong entry that perfectly combines several strong seed parts usages and effective building techniques into a fun, polished and coherent creation. That’s what I call a performance!

Rylie Howerter

Not an easy set of entries to judge, but when is it ever?

Eann came right out of the gate with a couple builds that deftly incorporated the bright seed part into their cheery colorschemes. Andrew's characteristic gray-on-black presentation really makes the Light Royal Blue pop out, but never in a way that makes them feel too tacked-on — that's the sweet spot for any Iron Builder build, in my opinion.

Most NPU in one build: Live Iron Builder Reaction (I didn't miss the crumpled lego bags!).

Build I'd most like to have on my desk: Blue-Bell Monastery (the seed part just works SO well as a mini fountain).

Most effective use of seedpart antistud: Farewell, Coral City.

In any case, the more I flip through the entries, the more I'm convinced that Perchta has seen deep into my soul, and I dare not cross her :)
