Welcome to Season 7 – Round 5 of Iron Builder!
Two new challengers for an empty throne – this will be fun!
Who will take home the crown?
The master of all things space and greeble goodness Tim Goddard or Bousker with their immersive scenes and beautiful art pieces?

And the seed part is…
This round’s seed part is the Curved Aircraft Door in White.
Now our two contestants have 14 days to come up with amazing and inspiring creations featuring this seed part. Wish them luck! They’ll better get cracking!
Who are you rooting for? Who will take it home? Whose builds reign supreme?
Only one way to find out! ALLEZ BRICK!

Shoe Store
There’s a challenge afoot, for which I’ll take the first step! I hope when you place second, this build can provide some heeling for the sole.

Little ship
It’s time for this competition to take off! I hope this little ship doesn’t leave you too far behind Bousker because I’m just getting started.

Winter Sleepy Time
Airplane doors on a spaceship? Why that’s plainly remarkable! Almost puts me to sleep though I’m afraid. stretches
I might just… settle in for… yawn …a nice little zzZ

Iron penguin
My builds have been roofless so far but I managed to stay awake after seeing Bousker builds ;p My next chilling build should keep us alert

Daisy Door Daze
Well I think you’ve definitely broken the ice with that last entry of yours – but would it be premature to bring flowers? Here are some Daisies for that sweet penguin of yours ;D

Iron Mars
Your daisies are blooming lovely Bousker but a bit predictable. I had the root of a similar idea however it didn’t germinate. Hopefully you will not see red when you see my martian microscale diorama. Is there life on Mars? And who knows what strange alien life pilots the little flier?

A close finish
You have your mind on Mars eh? I think you should ready your engines first! While this race might’ve been a close finish, I assure you ours won’t be! … because I’ll be the winner. yeah. …of the contest. (between you and I) nailed it

Vespa
Did I keep you waiting Bousker ? If you want a race my moped will take on your Cars any day. Relax, have a coffee and chill for a while.

Free Sailing
hIgh sea you’ve got wind back in your sails: and so my wait shall abait! I’ll race you anywhere, be it by car, moped or boat! I don’t feel stern, on the contrary I submit my own entry with abow

Patrol
I think I noticed a little puff of wind a couple of days ago, hardly enough to put wind in my sails. We have had transport by road, sea and air but legs are surely the way forward? It’s time to go back to the future!

GLaDos
Nice entry. In fact, you did so well I’m going to note this on your file in the commendations section. Oh, there’s lots of room here.

Iron Teeth
I see you like playing games. Here’s a new one for you in the form of the latest Icons set, but watch out, you don’t want to get bitten! You need wisdom to create teeth like these and not to be too long in the tooth.

Madman Manor
Quit that chattering: you’ve always been more bark than bite! Tempting me with that crown nearly drives me mad! Is it too late to experiment?!

Iron Elementary
Your experimental build has allowed you to reach new heights with that ladder but the build is more alchemy than true science, I’m not a fan. Perhaps my next post will help you in our last day building? IRON ELEMENTARY is an excellent sourced of inspiration on how to use this tricky part, you can choose from the bite size Instagram post or the full website article on Flickr in 2 parts. Be sure to check out the comments on Flickr.

Portrait Gallery
Oh how educational, if not a bit elementary my dear Watson. You needn’t worry about giving me ideas, I’ve been preoccupied a’door’ing some fabulous portraits…

The Matlese Brick
Well Tim its been a wild ride, but I’ve got one last build up my sleeve. Speaking of elementary my dear Watson’, have I got a mystery for you! This film noir detective is on to something…
The past 8 builds of mine have all each had a previous IB part hidden in them. (Some more obvious/difficult than others)
- Cat Tail in Bright Light Orange
- Watering Can in lime green
- Panel 3×5 Solar / Deltoid with Clip in white
- Vehicle, Spoiler 2 x 4 with Bar Handle in sand blue
- Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Bar in dark red
- Track Switch 9V in Yellow
- Minifigure, Utensil Dynamite Sticks Bundle in red
- 4x4x11 Curved Balloon Panel in white

Iron freighter
Another build with just an hour to go. Not such a mystery but plenty of detail to examine with a magnifying glass. It’s curtains for us then Bousker. It’s been an honour.
Round 5 is officially over!
It is now in the hands of our judges to decide who has won this round!
Good luck to both our builders!
I created a table of my own before the start of this contest to compare the work of two outstanding long time authors.
After getting the scoresheet with Iron Builder, I checked my own table in more detail, and the final score was 13:12. It's crazy that there was only 1 point between them! I think Tim won this one the hard way...
Well, it was a really good battle. I saw two skilled and exceptional use of parts. From the beginning, Bousker's use of the gimmick on the shoe, to Tim's use of it as teeth, pectoral fins, it was breathtaking.
I'll admit, from the start, I thought Bousker had the advantage, and the first half of the course was a fantastic piece of work. Especially the characterisation of Cars. But Tim came in later and he caught up on the turtle. 'Teeth' really poked my funny bone.
Finally, my congratulations to Tim, who was the winner in my opinion, and to Bousker, who equally defended their honour.
While the spectator in me had an amazing two weeks of enjoying countless amazing Iron Builds, the judge now has to draw the airplane-door-thin line between both our contestants.
Parts Usage
To me, Tim’s greatest achievement in this category is his Vespa, because all three different part usages are clean and combine nicely. Unfortunately, some of his entries, such as Little Ship, Patrol and Iron Freighter mostly take the airplane door as an aesthetic-looking, yet unspecific shape, resulting in beautiful MOC’s, that would still work almost equally good with any other rounded panel piece.
Although same can be said about Bousker’s GLaDos, I think they have the edge here as they constantly found new ways to incorporate multiple different seed part usages into a single build. Highlights are the Shoe Store, where they seamlessly hide different parts of the door to use it for many different shapes and Winter Sleepy Time, that combines shingles and cushions through clever framing.
The plane door’s underside proved tough to hide in builds like Tom’s manta ray and Bousker’s sail boat, but the latter actually found its unique slit compelling enough to try it on a door, which has to be my favorite seed part usage in this round!
Build Quality
Build quality was mostly very high in this round, Tim amazed me with his signature sci-fi stuff. His Iron Freighter is the clear standout here, well balanced, nicely shaped and greebled with a strong and consistent color scheme. The rings for the Iron Teeth windup mechanism are also very cool. Bousker on the other hand went all the way building their entries into full scenes, their GLaDos comes with great wiring and their incorporation of previous seed parts is incredibly elegant.
To decide this category, I’ll have to be nitpicky: Some seed part usages make things look forced, a rather blocky penguin on one, a rather blocky scientist on the other side. The doors do not line up convincingly on the chattering teeth and the daisies’ pot. The Patrol’s terrain or the Portrait gallery could use just a tad more detail. I wish the Little Ship and Vespa had a more intriguing color palette, but most importantly, the Iron Elementary’s sketch models feel – well – sketchy. Therefore, although Tim had the highest peaks, I’ll reward Bousker’s strong consistency.
Performance
Both builders showed and wowed us with a great diversity in scales, styles and themes. Between beautifully lit scenes, inspiring sci-fi vehicles, plants, animals and life-style objects, no one seemed limited in any way. With both even going for a meticulously crafted and mind-blowing meta-entry near the end, I’ll close my critique by considering Bousker’s A close finish a foreshadowing metaphor: It’s an unresolvable tie here, but they get to win the Piston Cup in the end!
I actually came into this expecting Tim’s greebly spacey sensibilities to win me over, but it was Bousker’s builds that really integrated the seed part in ways that made them feel necessary to the build. That GLaDos was beautiful, and didn’t even register as an Iron Builder build at first — but the more I looked, the more seed parts I found. The waves around the boat, the madman’s ladder, the cars’ eyes—!
But this was truly hard to judge, and I don’t want to slight Tim at all: that Patrol mech is something I’d love to have on my desk, and Iron Mars had the best use of the part’s underside overall. And a special mention to his Iron Elementary, perhaps the most inspired IB bit I’ve seen yet. Y’all put on a fantastic show :)
